  11. <p>The unit was created as the 552nd Airborne Early Warning & Control Wing at McClellan AFB in March 1955, with a variety of EC- and RC-121s operated until 1976. The unit achieved Group status in July 1974 but was inactivated in April 1976. The unit reformed as the 552nd AW&CW at Tinker AFB in July 1976 in readiness for the assignment of the E-3 Sentry. The 552nd upgraded to Division standard in October 1983 until the formation of the 28th Air Division in April 1985, when it reverted yet again to 552nd AW&CW. The wing was responsible for the EC-130Es of the 7th ACCS at Keesler AFB from October 1976 until 1994. The unit changed designation to the 552nd Air Control Wing in 1992, while the squadrons received the curious designation of Airborne Air Control Squadron on 1 July 1994.
